New National Taxpayer Advocate Named

Nina E. Olson founder of the Richmond, Virginia based community tax law project the first independent low-income taxpayer’s clinic in the United States, has been named as the next National Taxpayer Advocate. Charles O. Rossotti, IRS commissioner, shows a lot of faith in Ms. Olson calling her an "advocate for taxpayer rights."

IRS is confident that Ms. Olson will be very effective in resolving taxpayer issues. She will give the taxpayers a "powerful voice" according to Rossotti. Before this appointment, Ms. Olson was a practicing attorney specializing in tax controversy work.

The National Taxpayer Advocate’s office was given expanded powers by congress in 1998. Ms. Olson will be the second National Taxpayer Advocate after Val Oveson following the "modernization" of IRS. The office exists as an independent voice within the IRS structure. Its job is to give voice to the taxpayer issues and to resolve them. Its job is to make sure that the IRS keeps in view the best interest of the taxpayers while making changes within the system.
